Jobs to do in your garden in July

As advised by the gardening experts at Secretts Garden Centre, Milford

Maintenance is really your main task for this month - watering, weeding and deadheading will be the order of the day.
If you are taking holidays in July or August,
don’t forget to make arrangements to
have your plants cared for.

• Finish planting out summer bedding plants in baskets, containers and borders.

• Remove faded flowers on early flowering perennials and cut the flower spike back to just above a new shoot or leaf. This often encourages a second bloom later in the season.

• Pinch out the tips of container plants to encourage bushy growth and plenty of flowers.

• Unwanted shoots or suckers should be removed from trees and shrubs to prevent them sapping strength from the plant.

• Deadhead bedding plants to encourage
new flowers.

• Make sure any weeds are removed before they have a chance to flower and set seed.

• Fast growing hedges should be clipped when necessary throughout the growing season to prevent them from getting out of hand.

• Mow lawns regularly. Raising the height of the blades during hot, dry weather will help to keep the grass from drying out and remain green.

• Keep containers, baskets and young plants
well watered.

• Keep greenhouses well ventilated and damp down regularly.

• Keep a check for unwanted insects.

• Plant out pot-grown sweet corn in blocks, not rows. Place them about 45cm apart each way.

• Harvest beetroot, peas, carrots, potatoes and other crops while they are still young and tender.

• Lettuce, salad leaves, radishes, kohl rabi and spring cabbage can be sown outside. French beans can be sown for a late crop and winter spinach can also be sown now.

• Take cuttings of woody stemmed herbs such as sage and thyme.

• Strawberries, currants, gooseberries, cherries and raspberries should be ready to enjoy. Remember to check any netted fruit to ensure that no birds have become trapped.

Don’t forget to take ‘time out’ to relax in your garden and enjoy the result of all your hard work!
